Updating & Upgrading

All about updating and upgrading the various components used.

Basics

Regular update to Pop_OS! can be achieved through the desktop GUI app or by employing the following commands:

apt update; apt upgrade

This can sometimes result in warnings when some repositories are not available anymore or have changed in some way. Usually this is not serious.

The operating system (Linux distribution) that we use is Pop!_OS. Pop uses special upgrade procedure employing a recovery partition which leads to pretty robust upgrading process. Still there is plenty of scope for things to go wrong (although they seldom really do).

The Pop!_OS upgrade procedure is described at length on their website which also describes how to solve potential upgrade problems. Generally it is advised to upgrade shortly after the upgrades become available. When deciding to do on upgrade it should be planned and announced to users (unlike our action recently).

The liszt server/laptop has a recovery partition yet recently proved difficult to smoothly upgrade. This is probably due to long overdue update/upgrade. The beethoven server has for historic reasons no recovery partition. This means upgrade needs some special attention.
